in order to really start making layouts you should try to familiar self with css and html. if you get really good with CSS and html positioning you wont need to use imageready or dreamweaver.you should check out the resource center in the forums,they have some really good tutorials and starter codes.

i usually use image ready because dream weaver is hard to figure out,too many buttons,lol

image ready is pretty much like dreamweaver only cheaper and with a little less features.it's also good for making animations and such.

firstly you need an image editor like photoshop or paintshop pro
and also you need an html editor like adobe dreamweaver or you could use adobe image ready,which comes with most editions of photoshop
